Practice Guidelines PDF Print E-mail

Welcome to Yoga Johns Studio!

These guidelines will ensure that all who have come to practice yoga will have a very positive experience.

  • Arrive on time to avoid disrupting the energy of the class. If you arrive late please do not enter class until the “Centering” or opening sequence is complete to avoid disrupting other class participants.
  • Before you enter, please sign in and find your pass card in the index box at the sign-in table and place it in the basket provided. If you are a “drop- in”, please take care of payment before class. Write a check or place cash in the basket and be sure that you sign in and indicate your method of payment. If you are a new student, please fill out the registration and release form and leave it on the sign in table.
  • Enter fresh and clean. Do not wear perfume or cologne. Taking a shower or bath before and after yoga is a very great refreshing addition for both your body and your mind.
  • Remove your shoes as you enter the house door. This is an ancient Eastern custom suggesting that you are leaving the external world behind as you enter your home. Wear loose comfortable clothing and bare feet. No socks!
  • No cell phones. Please leave your phone in the car.
  • Park your car in front of the house along the fences.
  • Practice on an empty stomach. Wait at least 2-3 hours after eating. A full stomach is difficult to deal with while practicing yoga.
  • Inform the teacher before class if you have injuries or limitations.
  • During the menstrual cycle, inversions are generally not recommended. Listen and respect your body and make a decision that is appropriate for you.
  • Remove contact lenses. Remove glasses for savasana, the final relaxation pose.
  • On the days that Yoga Nidra is taught -- please practice loving silence after class (usually the last week of every month on Tuesday nights)
  • Be consciously mindful of the sacredness of the space—as you gather your props (the teachers “set-up” at the head of the room will be your guide). Align your mat with the floorboards and make sure that those behind you are able to see the teacher. Stagger the mats in such a way as to allow for this. Keep your props neatly placed. Please be courteous and do not walk over other students’ mats.
  • After class fold your mats, blankets and straps neatly and return them to the designated areas into the shelves at the back of the room. Roll the mats. Fold the blankets and place them so that the fringe is toward the back of the shelf. Bolsters should be placed so that the handles face forward toward the fronts so as to allow easy removal.
  • Water can be found in the kitchen area. Paper cups are provided. Bring your own bottled water if you wish. Often, during the winter months, homemade chai tea is offered after class.
  • During yoga practice, stay in your comfort zone. Always breathe consciously. Aggressive practice is dangerous. Feel the poses -- do not perform them. Yoga is a non-competitive art form. Your sensitivity to the pose is far more important than you ability to do the poses. Use your breath to pause if you are using too much effort. Welcome your tight spots. They are the messengers that are asking you to listen to your body.
